You might think you have seen everything nature has to offer with all those fancy nature shows on television. I used to think that was the case, too, having gotten all my channels with sites like http://www.direct.tv/direct-tv/Georgia/ but I was wrong, and if you want to see what nature really has to offer then you are going to want to take a trip to the Georgia mountains.

If you live in Georgia and you are close enough to drive, then consider making a day of it. If you aren’t quite so local, I can assure you that the journey is more than worth it, but you need to be prepared for a physical challenge like no other. The scenery may look gorgeous and it might really seem like it’s a pleasure cruise, but the mountains are no pushover. Make sure you bring plenty of water for the trip and make sure you are wearing some long sleeve shirts and pants. You may not want to do this, especially during the hotter seasons but the only thing worse than sweating a little is catching Lyme disease from a subtle tick. And be sure to do some research on the trails you are looking to hike, if you bring the kids. Some might prove a little too challenging.

There are great recreational hot spots for you to go hiking in while you are on a trip to Georgia. But, when you find the perfect mountain tops, which are high enough to really challenge you in your climb, you are going to want to make sure that you take the requisite safety precautions, in order to avoid danger and harm to yourself, and to those who are taking the climb with you. Although you may be an enthusiast, and love the thrill of climbing up to the top, you really must take precautions to make sure your climb is safe, and to avoid injury to yourself, and your fellow climbers.

So, you want to make sure that you are wearing the right safety gear, harnesses, hiking (climbing) boots, and the right headgear, and protective gear. Taking these precautions is the best way to lessen the amount of harm and injury that will occur, in the event you slip, or experience a hard hit mountain side. You also want to make sure that you have a harness which can really handle your weight. This is probably the most important equipment, just in case you experience a slip, the harness will be able to stop the fall in time.

There are many hiking opportunities in the mountains of northern Georgia. The most well known series of trails is the Appalachian Trail, which begins on Springer Mountain in Georgia and follows the east ridge of the Appalachian Mountains all the way to Maine. There are many other trails as well, some connecting to the AT and some totally separate.

The scenery is often gorgeous, especially in early June when the rhododendrons, mountain laurel, and wild azaleas are blooming. The forests are mostly hardwood of hickory, oak and poplar, shielding thickets of blueberry and huckleberry, and small glades of bloodroot and trillium.

The quiet, observant hiker can often spot specimens of the mountain wildlife. Deer are frequent, as well as rabbits, possums, chipmunks, raccoons, and wild turkeys. Black bears can occasionally be seen, as well as foxes. Sometimes bobcats can be heard at night. Beavers and otters are found along the rivers, as well as many water fowl and birds of prey, including eagles.

The hiker who is interested in history as well as nature will also be pleased. The Civil War battles of Chickamauga and Kennesaw Mountain both took place in the mountains of northern Georgia, and the National Park Service maintains hiking trails at both battle sites. You can follow in the footsteps of Bragg and Rosecrans, Longstreet and Thomas, and Johnston and Sherman, all the while immersing yourself in the beautiful nature and clean air of the mountains.
